Create an original video built around this year’s theme: “Speak Up – Your Life Depends On It.” Your video should help inspire others to speak up – to tell a friend or adult to put the phone down, or to ask someone to buckle their seat belt – rather than staying quiet. Encourage your school and community to take the “Buckle Up Phone Down Showdown” pledge.

Distracted driving and not wearing a seat belt don’t just put the driver at risk – they put everyone in the car, and everyone else on the road at risk too.

Your video should aim to give teens the courage to speak up instead of staying silent due to fear of being judged or ridiculed. Some suggestions include

  • A passenger telling the driver to put their phone away
  • A friend reminding someone to buckle their seat belt before the car moves
  • A student encouraging classmates to take the pledge and hold each other accountable

Videos should make clear that staying silent isn’t an option – speaking up could save a life.

Video Guidelines

  • PSA must be student created
  • Video must focus on this year’s theme: “Speak Up – Your Life Depends On It” and address distracted driving and/or not wearing a seat belt
  • Video must include a BUPD Showdown QR code and include a call-to-action to take the BUPD Showdown safe driving pledge
  • Video must be a minimum of 30 seconds and a maximum of 2 minutes in length and must be 25 MB or less. If filmed on a smartphone, it must be filmed horizontally
  • If statistics are used, sources may only include those available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (nhtsa.gov), the Missouri State Highway Patrol, or the Missouri Department of Transportation’s SaveMOLives Safety Dashboard
  • Content must obey copyright laws and not contain offensive language or dangerous material
  • Video must be completed during the contest period

Why It’s Important

In 2024, 11% of crash fatalities in Missouri were related to distracted driving. A distracted driver is one who is actively engaging in any activity that diverts his or her attention from the task of driving.

Over the past 5 years, there were an average of 393 fatalities per year that resulted in from not wearing a seat belt.

Parental/Guardian Media Consent

Schools are responsible for obtaining a signed parental/guardian media consent form for any student who appears on camera, is otherwise identifiable, or is featured in photos or video submitted as part of a Pledge Booster Activity (including video PSAs, social media posts, and event photos) prior to public sharing or contest submission. Contest organizers reserve the right to request proof of consent for any submitted content and may decline to approve a Pledge Booster Activity submission if consent documentation is not provided upon request.
